Vietnam and the Czech Republic have been encouraged to renew their cooperative commitments and together set new goals for their friendship.
The call was made by Director of the HCM City Department of External Affairs Tran Quang Dung at a ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries in Ho Chi Minh City on February 2.
The event was attended by Czech’s Ambassador to Vietnam Michal Kral together with Vietnamese people who had studied or worked in the Czech Republic .
He expressed appreciation for the Czech people’s support in various fields ranging from training, health care, aiding the poor and disabled children to official development assistance (ODA) provision.
The Czech Republic has regularly participated in international conferences in support of Vietnam and was the first East European country to continuously provide ODA capital for Vietnam, he added.
Dung also spoke highly of Czech’s nominating Vietnam in the list of 12 prioritised countries of 2010 in economic diplomacy, hoping that in this favourable condition the relations between HCM City and Brno City of Czech will be strengthened and soon yield practical results.
An agreement on establishment of the partnership for development between the two cities will be signed under the proposal of Vice Chairman of the Czech Senate Jiri Liska during his recent visit to Vietnam.
Czech Honourable Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Ngo Hong Chuyen said that the Czech Republic has become the second homeland of thousands of Vietnamese people, who have served as a bridge in the traditional relationship between the two countries.
A Czech trade promotion agency was established in HCM City, providing important information on economics, trade and investment for both countries’ businesses.
Czech has invested 35 million USD in Vietnam , focusing on glassware production, electric equipment and electronics. Two-way trade between the two countries reached over 365 million USD in 2009./.
