Vietnam always creates a favourable environment for foreign telecoms and IT companies to do business in the country, stated an official from the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC).
Speaking at the opening of the International Telecommunications Conference in Hanoi on May 19, the MIC’s Deputy Minister Le Nam Thang said that in recent years, Vietnam’s telecoms sector has made a lot of progress, contributing greatly to maintaining the country’s economic growth, improving people’s living standards and closing the telecoms development gap with more advanced countries.
Vietnam is seen by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as one of the countries to enjoy the highest growth in telecoms in the world, even when it faced difficulties arising from the global economic crisis in 2009 and the first few months of 2010.
By the end of April, Vietnam had 140 million telephone subscribers with a rate of 164 telephones per 100 people. The country also reported more than 23.6 million internet users or 27.6 percent of the total population.
The two-day conference, themed “Ensuring Vietnamese society has broadband services” attracted 200 representatives from telecoms businesses and telecom service providers both inside and outside the country.
On the first day, several representatives from domestic and foreign telecoms businesses shared their experiences in developing telecoms and 3G technology as well as putting forward measures to help Vietnam become the leading centre for producing telecoms equipment in Southeast Asia./.
