The sixth national congress of the Vietnam Farmers’ Union (VNFU) is scheduled to take place in June, 2013 to decide orientations and targets for the union’s action programmes as well as farmers’ movement in 2013-2018.
The congress will look at the role of farmers and VNFU in developing agriculture and building new rural areas.
The position and role of agriculture, farmers and rural areas in the national construction and defence have been highlighted in many viewpoints and policies of the Party and State, especially the resolution on Vietnamese agriculture and peasantry, issued at the Party Central Committee’s 7 th session (10 th tenure).
Since its establishment, VNFU has unceasingly worked to improve farmers’ material and spiritual life, playing the core in farmers’ movement to promote socio-economic development in rural areas.
The union has coordinated with the working class and intellectuals to create a foundation for the national great unity bloc while expanding international cooperation to realise the goal of making people rich and building a strong, democratic, just and civilised country.
By the end of 2012, the union had a total of 10,536 member societies nationwide. More than 92,700 villages and hamlets have VNFU branches.-VNA
