Vietnam has asked the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to assist it with biodiversity, preservation, the sustainable use of biodiversity and maintaining ecological commodities and services in the future, during talks with the organisation in Hanoi on October 14.

The talks have brought together 100 delegates from various ministries and sectors, the GEF Secretariat, donors, non-governmental organisations, international organisations, universities and research institutes in Vietnam .

The event will enable Vietnam to access new policies and procedures that the GEF and its agencies have recently adopted, in order to facilitate GEF funded projects in the country while at the same time enhancing its links with the other parties involved.

So far Vietnam has received GEF funding for 34 projects around the country and has taken part in 28 regional and global GEF projects.

GEF funding has helped Vietnam to preserve its natural resources and protect the environment.

Established in 1991, the GEF has allocated funding to projects with global environmental benefits in the fields of climate change, biodiversity, land degradation and pollutants./.
