At a reception for visiting New Zealand Governor General Jerry Mateparae in Hanoi on August 5, General Secretary of the Vietnam Communist Party (CPV) Nguyen Phu Trong expressed his delight with the development of the comprehensive partnership between the two countries.

He highly valued the fact that the two countries have successfully implemented their plan of action for the 2010-2013 period and signed another one for 2013-2016.

The Party chief said he hopes that New Zealand will continue closer coordination with Vietnam in coping with climate change, preventing sea level rise, developing highly-qualified agricultural infrastructure, researching clean energy technology and protecting the environment for sustainable development.

He appreciated New Zealand’s maintenance of the ODA provision for Vietnam, which has remarkably helped the country boost its socio-economic development.

In reply, Mateparae affirmed that New Zealand attaches much importance to the strategic partnership with Vietnam in all fields, including politics, economics, trade, investment, science and technology, culture, education and training.

He hailed the positive results of the 2010-2013 plan of action and hoped that the two sides will effectively implement the plan for the 2013-2016 period.

He said he wants to strengthen connectivity and people-to-people exchange between the two countries, enriching the content of their comprehensive partnership to practically celebrate the 40 th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties.

The Governor General also voiced his wish that the two sides will continue to work together at regional and international multilateral forums.

Earlier on the same day, the guest was received by National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, who described the visit as a contribution to deepening the comprehensive partnership between the two countries.

He expressed his hope that the two Parliaments will further increase cooperation activities, delegation exchanges and law-making experience sharing as well as coordination at international inter-parliamentary forums.

The NA Chairman also invited the New Zealand Parliament to send a delegation to Vietnam for the 132nd General Assembly of the International Inter-Parliament Union (IPU-132) in 2015.

Mateparae briefed his host on the outcomes of his talks with President Truong Tan Sang during which they agreed to apply measures to further boost comprehensive cooperation between the two countries, with priority to be given to the exchange of all-level delegations.

Hailing Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements over the past years, Mateparae shared Chairman Hung’s view to continue promoting existing cooperation mechanisms and work more closely together to carry out joint programmes and projects in various realms for their mutual interest and the sake of peace and development in the region and the world.-VNA
