Concrete steps for regional cooperation in forming a common ASEAN methodof compiling statistics by 2015 will be the focus of a meeting of theheads of ASEAN statistics departments, in Hanoi on October 7-9.
The acting General Director of the Vietnam Statistics GeneralDepartment, Do Thuc, told reporters that the 11 th ASEAN Heads ofStatistical Offices Meeting (AHSOM) will also draw partners from theUnited Nations (UNSD), the European Union (EUROSTAT), Japan , theRepublic of Korea and China .
They aim tocreate common statistical indicators and common statistical databaseacross the Association of Southeast Association Nations (ASEAN).
The contents will also be part of the joint statement to be adoptedby a three-day ASEAN Summit scheduled to open in Hanoi on October 28this year with Vietnam as its chair.
Also highon the meeting’s agenda is an evaluation of the EU-sponsored programmeon statistic capacity building, cooperation with partners on solutionsfor finance and human resources development for the ASEAN statisticalsector.
Thuc added that his agency with 65 yearsof experience, has played an active role in UN-sponsored programmes. Ithas worked closely with UN bodies, he said, citing the UN DevelopmentProgramme (UNDP), the UN Population Programme (UNFPA), the UN IndustrialDevelopment Organisation (UNIDO), the Food and AgriculturalOrganisation (FAO), the UN Educational, Scientific and CulturalOrganisation (UNESCO), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and theInternational Labour Organisation (ILO).
Cooperation has also been expanded with other internationalorganisations such as the EUROSTAT- a directorate for statistics in theEuropean Commission, World Bank, Asian Development Bank and theInternational Statistics Institute.
The VietnamStatistics General Department (VSGD) has also taken the initiative toboost statistics-related operations within the ASEAN, the UN Economicand Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and East Asia .
The national statistics chief added that thestatistics provided by Vietnam have been used when calculating theUN Millennium Development Goals and have been used and praised byinternational organisations.
The VSGD hasdischarged its duty as the national coordinator in the General DataDissemination System under the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Thucemphasised.
The 10-member ASEAN consists ofBrunei , Cambodia , Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar , Indonesia , thePhilippines , Singapore and Thailand , plus 2010 Chair Vietnam./.
