Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung received the visiting Speaker of the Indonesia People’s Consultative Assembly (MDR), Taufiq Kiemas, in Hanoi on Dec. 20.
PM Dung said that the visit, which takes place on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties, would help strengthen and boost the Vietnam-Indonesia traditional friendship and cooperation.
He praised the results of talks between Speaker Taufiq Kiemas and Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Phu Trong, which, he said, would contribute to boosting ties between the two countries and parliaments as well as for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the whole region.
He thanked Indonesia for supporting Vietnam to fulfill the ASEAN Chair 2010 and congratulated Indonesia on taking the ASEAN Chair 2011 to build a stronger ASEAN Community following the spirit of the ASEAN Charter and to expand the partnership outside ASEAN.
He expressed his wish that the two sides would continue boosting cooperation in trade and investment.
PM Dung took the occasion to ask the Indonesian side to promptly release Vietnamese sailors, who are being held in custody, to enable reunion with their families to welcome the upcoming, traditional New Year Festival.
Speaker Taufiq Kiemas expressed his hope that the two countries would continue to effectively implement the signed agreements, especially on fishing and national defence and said that the current trade turnover of over 2 billion USD had not matched the potential of the countries, so the two sides should focus on this field.
Relating to Vietnamese sailors, he asked the Vietnamese Ambassador to Indonesia to work with the Indonesian Foreign Ministry to submit the case to the President, and not let it affect on the traditional friendship between the two countries./.
