The Vietnam Food Administration has issued a warning and called for inspection of local businesses that might be importing prepackaged caramel apples from the United States.

The apples have reportedly killed at least three persons in the United States, and caused 30 others to be hospitalised due to possible infection by the listeria monocytogenes virus.

The Vietnam Food Administration received a warning from the International Network of Food Safety Authorities about a possible international recall of the caramel apple product.

Health authorities have also been asked to be more vigilant about food poisoning cases that show symptoms similar to the listeria monocytogenes infection.

The consumption of food contaminated with the virus can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea, and can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

The Food Administration has also requested the National Agro Forestry Fisheries Quality Assurance Department to coordinate in inspecting imported fruits entering Vietnam.-VNA
