Vietnam and Laos have agreed to accelerate the planting of markers along their shared border this year setting a target of building 237 markers and completing the remaining work of 2009.
The agreement was reached during the sixth-round meeting of experts of the Vietnam-Laos Joint Committee for Border Marker Planting which concluded in the Lao capital of Vientiane on January 11.
The two sides agreed that to they will focus on marker planting in the first six months of the year to avoid the rainy season.
They also compared notes on preparations for the 19 th annual meeting on Vietnam-Laos borders scheduled for next month in Vietnam .
Last year, Vietnam and Laos defined 190 locations and built 141 markers, which was behind schedule due to favourable weather conditions.
The Vietnamese delegation to the meeting was led by Ton Sinh Thanh, Head of the Western Border Department of the Foreign Ministry’s National Border Committee while the Lao delegation was headed by Phukhau Phama Vongsa, Head of the Office of the Foreign Ministry’s National Border Committee./.
