Vietnam makes breakthroughs at Samsung Collegiate Programming Cup 2019

Hanoi (VNA) – Five out of 10 Vietnamese students won prizes at the Samsung Collegiate Programming Cup 2019 (SCPC 2019). Notably, Vietnam secured a third prize for the first time in the final round of the contest.

The 10 Vietnamese students joined other 130 contestants from the Republic of Korea (RoK) to compete in the SCPC 2019 held in the RoK on July 30. Five of them win prizes, including a third prize.

Vietnam makes breakthroughs in SCPC 2019

The SCPC was first held in the RoK in 2015, then expanding to Vietnam and India since 2017.

This year’s event saw an increasing number of contestants, up over 1,000 from the previous year. A total of 6,200 contestants from the host RoK, India and Vietnam participated in the SCPC 2019.

In the second round of the SCPC 2019, five among the 25 contestants gaining absolute scores (1,000 points) were from Vietnam. 

Kim In-soo, General Director of Samsung Vietnam Mobile Research and Development Center (SVMC), said he was very proud of Vietnamese students and described them as the future generation of Vietnam, who brought glory to the nation by their talent, bravery and efforts.

Only a few days later, on July 30, the Vietnamese team continued making new breakthroughs when five out of the 10 Vietnamese students sponsored by Samsung to compete in the final round in the RoK won prizes.

Particularly, Nguyen Hy Hoai Lam, a second-year student from the University of Science (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City), brought home the third prize, the first of its kind secured by a Vietnamese student.

Lam said he was very happy to win the prize, adding that all of the 10 Vietnamese students joined the final round with strong determination and desire to bring home new achievements.

Apart from the third prize of Nguyen Hy Hoai Lam, the Vietnamese team claimed two fourth prizes and two fifth prizes by Nguyen E Ro and Nguyen Diep Xuan Quang from the University of Science (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City); and Nguyen Xuan Tung from the International University (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City) and Duong Quoc Hung from the University of Engineering and Technology (Vietnam National University, Hanoi).

Seizing opportunities from the Fourth Industrial Revolution

According to experts, high-quality information technology human resources is always placed at the top priority when businesses plan to implement breakthrough research and development (R&D) strategies. It also creates an opportunity for the country to make use of opportunities from the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Over the past few years, Samsung has carried out a number of programmes to develop high-quality human resources for Vietnam, including cooperation programmes with universities to support outstanding students in the field as well as education projects.

The annual Samsung Collegiate Programming Cup is one of the company’s efforts to seek young talents to serve Samsung’s long-term development goals in Vietnam.

Kim In-soo said Samsung is building a headquarters of the R&D Centre in Hanoi with more convenient facilities to attract high-quality human resources and improve capacity for Vietnamese engineers.

Kim believed that with an ideal working environment and excellent human resources, the SVMC will become the biggest R&D centre of Samsung on the globe./.
