Director of the Vietnam National Defence Academy Vo Tien Trung led a delegation to Mozambique from June 30-July 2 to promote national defence cooperation between the two nations.

This is the first visit made by a delegation of Vietnamese high-ranking military officials since the Vietnamese Embassy was opened in Mozambique in 2009.

During their stay, the Vietnamese officials attended meetings with the Deputy Minister of National Defence Patricio Jose and other senior officials to discuss cooperation between the two nations’ armies.

The hosts expressed their admiration for Vietnam’s historic efforts in defence and nation-building.

They spoke highly of the support the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) has provided in terms of tactics and strategy, training and skills development, and infrastructure facilities.

Senior Lieutenant General Vo Tien Trung reiterated the friendship and cooperation between the two peoples and armies forces, saying that Vietnam was keen to share its experience with traditional nations.

He briefed his host on the East Sea issue, as well as the consistent policies of the State and the VPA in protecting territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The delegation also met up with the Director of the Mozambique Institute for National Defence Studies, Daniel Frazao Chale, to talk about educational exchange programmes. They visited the Frelimo Party’s Headquarters and met with the Secretary of the Party’s Committee Jose Augusto Tomo Psico.

The VPA and the Army of Mozambique established their close cooperation in 1975.

In March, 2011, the two defence ministries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation during the Mozambican Defence Minister’s visit to Vietnam.

The two nations also organised an exchange for their military attaches in 2011.-VNA
