The Vietnam Foreign Ministry and the US state of Oregon signed a letter of intent in Hanoi on October 19.

The move took place in conjunction with the two countries’ 20-year ties celebration.

Addressing the signing ceremony, Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc said the pact lays the groundwork for growing engagement between Vietnam and the US, following the successfully negotiated Trans-pacific Partnership of which both nations are members.

US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius lauded the practical affiliations between Oregon and its Vietnamese partners, particularly in manpower training, trade, search and rescue and the mitigation of natural disaster damage.

Oregon Governor Katherine Brown expected the agreement would expand cooperation and generate mutual benefits.

In 2011, the US Government selected Oregon to become a special partner of Vietnam in search and rescue with bilateral programmes implemented and Oregon’s popular trademarks, such as Nike, Intel and Colombia Sportwear, entering Vietnam.-VNA
