Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has approved the investment plan of a project to carry out policies and programmes to prevent and respond to gender-based violence, domestic violence and handle the issue of prostitution, using evidence and a human right-based approach.

The project is funded by the United Nations Population Fund and the Ministry of Labour, and is carried out by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA). The funding for the project is over 7.7 million USD in non-refundable official development assistance (ODA).

A study on behavioural changes in male chauvinism will be conducted under the project, providing a basis for amending the Law on Gender Equality, the Law on Domestic Violence Prevention and Control and other policies.

Standards for gender-based violence prevention will be built alongside various communication campaigns on policy advocacy and behavioural changes together with models involving male farmers to stave off domestic violence.

Scientific evidence will also be gathered to build a bill featuring prostitution issues. Capacity in building and implementing policies on gender equality, domestic violence prevention and control and prostitution issues will also be enhanced through the project.

The MoLISA is expected to build an appropriate management mechanism for the project and identify the responsibilities of agencies, project owners and co-ordinating organisations to ensure its effectiveness.-VNA
