Vietnam responds to year of int’l biodiversity

Duong Thanh An, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s Biodiversity Conservation Department, was speaking at a seminar on the international year of bio-diversity and the programme to carry out the biodiversity law which was held in Dong Hoi city, the central province Quang Binh, on June 3.

The event, held by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, drew the participation of representatives from relevant central and local agencies as well as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the German organisation for technical cooperation (GTZ) in Vietnam.

Delegates highlighted the goal of the campaign to raise awareness on biodiversity and impacts of biodiverisity degradation. They reviewed the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals on biodiversity committed by heads of nations at the summit on sustainable development in Johannesburg in 2002.

At the event, acting director of the biodiversity conservation department Le Thanh Binh mentioned the global issue of climate change, saying in Vietnam, the exploitation, use and smuggling of bio-diversified resources are alarming.

He said it is necessary to educate the biodiversity law to all people, especially those living in and around wildlife reserves./.
