Vietnam sees chance for IUU yellow card to be rescinded

An inspection team from the EC has paid a working visit in Ho Chi Minh City and Kien Giang to conduct a second review of Vietnam's implementation of recommendations regarding IUU fishing.

In October 2017, Vietnam was issued a “yellow card” warning for illegal seafood exploitation by the European Commission, which has seriously hit seafood exports to the European market.

To cope with the situation, many businesses have taken the initiative to set up checks on traceability.

Together with the efforts being made by enterprises, authorized units have joined hands to combat illegal fishing.

Currently, about 70% of fishing ports in the country can conduct traceability assessments. At the same time, fishermen have invested in tracking and monitoring devices.

Vietnam has carefully studied the legal framework to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing with advice from the EU Commission. This also the foundation for Vietnam to have the yellow card rescinded by the EU./.
