Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam is bringing unique cultural stories to the global stage at World EXPO 2025 in Osaka, Japan, highlighting both its own traditions and the cultural ties shared with the host nation.
The Vietnam – Japan Cultural Exchange Association, in collaboration with several partners, organised a special programme titled “Vietnam–Japan Cultural Exchange” on August 22 within the framework of the expo. The event featured Vietnamese artistic troupes presenting performances that blended national legends with Japanese contemporary art forms.
Two Vietnamese Yosakoi dance teams, Nui Truc Sakura and Hanoi Sennen, performed interpretations inspired by the legend of Lac Long Quan, the father of the first Hung King - the legendary founder of Vietnam, and the legendary hero of Thanh Giong (Saint Giong) – the symbol of Vietnam’s strength and patriotism. Their dynamic choreography incorporated the vibrant energy of Yosakoi, a Japanese dance style that originated in Kochi prefecture after World War II. Known for its youthful spirit, accessibility, and ability to spread positive emotions, Yosakoi has become a cultural bridge between communities.
Both troupes were recognised as “Vietnam Yosakoi Ambassadors” by Kochi authorities in 2017, affirming their role in fostering mutual understanding between the two countries. Through the performances, Vietnamese artists conveyed messages of unity, resilience, and national pride, underscoring the determination of the Vietnamese people to overcome challenges with solidarity.

The programme also featured the strong, soulful voice of singer Trang Bui, who presented a repertoire of both traditional and international songs. Among the highlights was “Co Doi Thuong Ngan” (Forest Goddess, one of the four goddesses in Vietnam’s Mother Goddess religion), performed with van singing rooted in Vietnam’s Mother Goddess worship, an intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO. By performing this piece, Vietnam showcased the depth of its spiritual traditions and the vitality of its folk culture.
In addition, Vietnamese artists offered a rendition of “O Sole Mio”, the world-famous Italian song that has resonated with audiences for more than 120 years. Its themes of joy, love, and the celebration of life aligned seamlessly with the broader message of EXPO: Connecting Nations through Shared Human Values.
Le Ngoc Dinh, Head of the organising committee and former Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stressed the significance of Vietnam’s participation.
“This programme not only helps introduce Vietnamese culture to Japan and to international visitors but also reflects the beauty of cultural exchange between our two countries. It makes a practical contribution to promoting the friendly cooperation and partnership between Vietnam and Japan,” he said.
World EXPO is one of the three largest global events, alongside the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games. Held every five years, it provides a platform for nations to showcase culture, innovation, and visions for the future.
This year’s exhibition runs from April 13 to October 13, 2025, in Osaka, drawing the participation of more than 158 countries and territories. Themed around sustainable social development, the event offers Vietnam an invaluable opportunity to highlight its cultural heritage, creativity, and commitment to building bridges with the international community./.
