Vietnamese southerners have put on coats and scarves in recent days as a northern cold spell touched down the region which has long been known for its warm weather all year round.

The average temperature in the south of Vietnam range between 25 degrees Celsius-35 degrees Celsius year round.

In early morning of January 15, the Southern Hydro-meteorological Station recorded temperatures as low as 16 degrees Celsius in Phuoc Long township of Binh Phuoc province, 15.4 degrees in Long Khanh township and 15.2 degrees in Tri An commune of Dong Nai province.

In Ho Chi Minh City, temperatures fell as low as 18.4 degrees in Nha Be district area and 18 degrees at the vicinity of Tan Son Nhat airport.

The same temperature was also reported in nearby southwestern provinces on the day.

Deputy Director of the hydro-meteorological station Nguyen Minh Giam said the temperature in HCM City has not been the lowest this winter and will maintain for another two days.

Southern Vietnam will continue to go through another cold spell in the next several days, he added.-VNA
