Vietnam steps up research on GM plants
Vietnam ’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has agreed to
authorise a study on the risk to biodiversity and the environment of genetically
modified (GM) maize.

Accordingly, the study will be carried out by the Vietnamese company Syngenta and the Thai company Monsanto.
The decision is seen as a breakthrough for MARD in its quest to apply advanced global scientific techniques to agricultural production in Vietnam .
Under the decision, both companies will work with Vietnam’s Hereditary Institute to conduct a study on GM maize from April 2010 to December 2011 and according to Vietnamese laws.
Earlier, the Maize Research Institute and the Cotton Research Institute had conducted research on GM maize and cotton, according to Pham Van Toan, the office manager of a biotechnology programme on agriculture and rural development, saying that the relevant state agencies plan to carry out controlled practical experiments in April this year./.
