Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s U16 football team were knocked out of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U16 Championship after losing 5-0 to Iran in the final match of Group C in Malaysia on September 27.

The squad finished bottom of Group C with only one point after three matches.

Amirhossein Azizi and Aria Barzegar scored two goals for Iran in the first 21 minutes after the whistle.

Things went from bad to worse for Vietnam, as on 31 minutes Vu Tien Long was sent off.

With more players in the field, Iran found the net three more times with two goals from Amin Doustali and another one from Azizi.

However, Iran, runners-up of the previous tournament in 2016, were still ousted as India and Indonesia both qualified for the next round after a 0-0 draw.

Earlier, Vietnam drew 1-1 with Indonesia in the second match of Group C on September 24 at Bukit Jalil Stadium.

Entering the match with great expectations, Vietnam created a surprise as it opened the scoring through Van Khang’s.

However, Vietnam could not protect its lead, as Sutan Zico equalised for Indonesia in the second half.

Two years ago in India, Vietnam reached the quarter-finals.

The top four teams will represent Asia at the FIFA U17 World Cup 2019, which will be held in Peru.-VNA
