Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has affirmed the Vietnamese Government’s constant support for cooperation activities between the Vietnamese and Thai defence ministries.

At a reception for visiting Thai Defence Minister General Sukumpol Suwanatat in Hanoi on September 26, PM Dung suggested that the two ministries effectively implement agreed defence cooperation activities, especially joint sea and air patrols.

He said he regards the Thai Defence Minister’s visit a practical contribution to promoting all-faceted cooperation between the two countries as well as peace, cooperation and development in the region.

As a neighbouring country and an ASEAN member, Vietnam is delighted to see strong developments in Vietnam-Thailand all-round cooperation and will do its utmost to further deepen and elevate the two countries’ cooperative relations to a new height, said the PM.

He also proposed both sides enhance linkages in food production and exports.

General Sukumpol Suwanatat briefed the PM of major results of his talks with Vietnamese Defence Minister General Phung Quang Thanh.

He said both sides agreed to boost the exchange of military delegations at all levels and mutual understanding between the two armies and step up cooperation in rice exports. They also talked about international and regional issues of mutual concern.

General Suwanatat assured the host leader that the Thai Ministry of Defence will closely work with its Vietnamese partner in deploying inked defence cooperation agreements in a broad and effective manner, contributing to increasing the two countries’ cooperative ties in all fields.

At their talks held earlier the same day, Thai Defence Minister General Sukumpol Suwanatat and his Vietnamese counterpart, General Phung Quang Thanh signed an agreement on defence cooperation.

The agreement serves as a legal foundation for the two ministries to push up ties in such activities as defence dialogue, training, joint sea patrols, coping with non-traditional security challenges and human resources training.
