A Vietnamese diplomat has stressed the urgent demand for UN reform and added that the reform should benefit all member countries.

The UN comprehensive reform, including the reform of the General Assembly, will help the organisation operate more efficiently in implementing tasks regulated in the UN Charter, Ambassador Le Hoai Trung, Head of the Vietnamese delegation to the UN, said at the General Assembly’s general discussion on UN reform in New York on Dec. 1.

According to Ambassador Trung, the reform of the General Assembly should aim to raise its position as a policy making agency and a main representative of the UN as well as its role in the process of setting up standards, compiling international law and selecting and appointing senior UN officials.

The General Assembly should become a global forum for member countries to discuss, share their viewpoints and decide all common issues, especially matters relating to peace, security and development, he said.

The General Assembly reform should be implemented in parallel with reforms of other UN organisations and agencies such as the UN Security Council, the Secretary-General’s Office and the Economic and Social Council.

At the session, Ambassador Trung said Vietnam highly valued the efforts made by the special working group on General Assembly reform in preparing document A/65/909 on the issue.

Vietnam proposes the group’s co-chairs operate as coordinators to settle differences among member countries and hold separate meetings with groups of member nations to promote mutual understanding between these groups, the Ambassador said.

In addition, Vietnam calls on the member countries to work together in the spirit of cooperation and jointly solve issues in order to create breakthroughs and reach specific outcomes at the 66 th General Assembly, he added./.
