Vietnam and Uzbekistan have agreed to step up cooperation in a wide range of fields, including economy, trade, investment, science and technology, and oil and gas.
The agreement was reached during an April 4-6 visit to Uzbekistan by Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai, who met with the Prime Minister, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, held talks with Deputy PM and Minister of Foreign Economic Relations Elyor Ganiyev, and had a working session with Deputy PM Ergash Shoismatov.
At the meetings, the two sides agreed to increase the exchange of visits at all levels, especially those by top leaders, in a move to promote friendship and cooperation between their two countries.
The officials held that economic and trade relations remain modest and have yet to match their potential, as well as the desires of both nations. They agreed to urge their inter-governmental committee to discuss measures to beef up their ties in these fields.
Vietnam plans to boost its import of cotton, fertiliser and liquefied gas from Uzbekistan and consider the possibility of producing garments, footwear and silks in Uzbekistan to serve local consumers and exports to other countries.
Uzbekistan asked Vietnam to help with tea growing, and in return, it will assist the Southeast Asian country in cotton cultivation.
Both sides pledged to create more favourable conditions for the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) to cooperate with Uzbekneftegaz in exploring, producing, transporting and processing oil and gas in Uzbekistan, Vietnam and third countries.
They also promised to adopt measures aimed at promoting trade, provide information about the demand in each other’s markets and further strengthen cooperation in culture, sports, education, training and tourism.
Deputy PM Hai and Minister of Economics Sunatilla Bekenov attended and delivered speeches at the Vietnam-Uzbekistan Business Forum, which drew the participation of more than 100 entrepreneurs from both countries.
During the visit, Vietnam and Uzbekistan signed an accord regarding visa exemptions for diplomatic passport holders and a framework agreement between PetroVietnam and Uzbekneftegaz.
Hai also attended the opening ceremony of the representative office of the PetroVietnam Exploration and Production Corporation in Central Asia, visited a number of economic and cultural establishments, and met with overseas Vietnamese in Uzbekistan./.
