The Vietnamese veterans club in Germany’s capital city of Berlin and Brandenburg state on May 2 hosted a celebration of the 35 th anniversary of Liberation of Southern Vietnam and the national reunification along with the 120 th birthday of the late President Ho Chi Minh (May 19).
More than 300 war veterans and their families got together at the event to recall the great victories of the nation and their memories in the battlefields.
Addressing the event, the club’s President Mai Ngoc Yen reviewed its activities during the first year of operation. He reported that Vietnamese veterans in Germany donated over 4,000 EUR to soldiers stationed in the homeland’s islands on the lunar New Year festival this year.
Phan Y Nhi, councillor of Vietnamese Embassy in Germany praised the club’s performance, saying that it has become a key organisation in activities of the Vietnamese community.
With a large number of Vietnamese war veterans, the club has actively joined programmes launched by the Vietnamese Embassy, the Vietnam Fatherland Front and the Vietnam Veterans Association.
On the occasion, the club held its first plenary congress, elected an executive board and adopted a charter and orientation for its operation.
Earlier, on May 1, a liaison committee of Vietnamese war veterans in Magdeburg city, Sachsen-Anhalt state, held a meeting to celebrate the April 30 Victory and its 5 th birthday.
The committee, recognised by the Vietnam Veterans Associations, is one of the oldest and strongest organisation in the Vietnamese community in Sachsen-Anhalt in particular and in Germany in general./.
