The second set repeated the first, with New Zealand going ahead, before Vietnam clawed their way back to win 25-21 thanks to Duong Thi Nhan's powerful spikes.
The third set saw Vietnam dominating the game with Nhan's excellent performance making the difference, with the hosts eventually going on to easily win the set 25-14 to secure their first victory at the championship.
The win helped Vietnam temporarily top the group and opened the door for the team to qualify for the quarter-finals.
