Speaking to almost 100 businesspeople from Vietnam and Switzerland at a business forum in Vevey onOct. 22, Vice President Doan stressed Vietnam’s competitiveadvantages and the government’s incentives, describing them as a goldenopportunity for Swiss firms to promote their investment and trade in theSoutheast Asian nation.
Switzerland has strength in capital,technology, industry and services while Vietnam has potential inagriculture, human resources and a broad consumption market, she said,adding that although there were differences in development levels andincomes, the two countries have complementary economies.
Investmentand trade between Vietnam and Switzerland has seen rapiddevelopment since the two countries signed a trade agreement in 1993.The European country lists Vietnam as an aid recipient of priority inthe Mekong region. Switzerland has provided non-refundable aid andpreferential loans to Vietnam ’s projects on environmentalprotection, administrative reform, agricultural development andeducation.
Switzerland has to date run 76 projects with a totalregistered capital of 1.45 billion USD in Vietnam . Major corporategroups enjoying success in Vietnam, such as Nestle, Novatis/Ciba andHolcim, have generated more than 2,000 jobs.
Vietnam’s goods,including seafood, coffee and apparel, are sold on the Swiss market,while Swiss goods are imported to Vietnam such as chemicals,pharmaceuticals, steel, ferrous metal, equipment and watches.
Bilateraltrade in key exports maintains growth, but cooperation in business hasnot yet matched with the two sides’ potential, Doan said.
VicePresident Doan is scheduled to attend the French-speaking Summit(Francophonie), which will take place in Montreux , Switzerlandfrom Oct. 23-24./.
