Hanoi (VNA) – Six Vietnamese students won five silver and one bronze medals at the 2017 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO), an online programming competition hosted by Australia on May 13, the Ministry of Education and Training announced on June 6.

The silver medals were won by 12th graders from Hanoi, Ha Tinh province, Thua Thien-Hue province, Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho city. An 11th grader in Hanoi also won a silver.

Vietnam was ranked seventh out of 30 countries and territories attending the competition.

Last year, the country finished fifth with one gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

The APIO is an online contest for the Asian Pacific region. The tasks are similar to those in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) and focus on designing algorithms.

The contest is held online, with students competing at contest sites within their own country or area.

This year, prizes were considered for 164 standout students in the region, 84 of whom brought home medals.

The competition was first held by the Australian IOI team in 2007.-VNA
