Vietnamese taekwondo martial artists won the first gold medal in the men’s team event at the 25 th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games being held in Laos.

The Vietnamese team took the lead after scoring 16.93 points from two bouts, followed by the Lao team with 16.80 points and the Filipino team with 16.7 points.

This is the first time that taewondo has been included in the SEA Games. This type of martial art has been Vietnam’s strong point at many international sporting competitions.

Also later the same day, Vietnam won a silver medal in the women’s sepak takraw event.

Vietnam sent 394 athletes to the Games to compete in 24 out of 25 events and hope to take home 70 gold medals and come third in the medals tally.

At the previous SEA Games in Thailand in 2007 Vietnam came third with a total of 64 gold medals./.
