Vietnamese athletes at first day of Paralympics

Swimmer Vo Thanh Tung of Vietnam successfully completed the qualifying round of the men’s S5 50m freestyle event in the first competition day at the London 2012 Paralympics on August 30.

However, Tung finished seventh out of eight at the final stage. Brazil ’s swimmer Daniel Dias scooped a gold medal.

Born in 1985 in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho , he took the champion title of the 50m free style event at the 2010 Asian Para Games in Guangzhou , China . He also won a gold medal at the sixth ASEAN Para Games in Indonesia in 2011.

At this Paralympics, Tung is scheduled to compete in the 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly events.

Also on August 30, weightlifter Nguyen Thi Hong lost a bronze to British competitor Newson Zoe in the women’s 40kg division.

As both succeeded with 88kg, the bronze was judged by their weight, which saw Newson Zoe is lighter than Hong by 300gr.

In the men’s 48kg division, weightlifter Nguyen Van Phuc ended seventh out of 11.

On August 31, weightlifter Chau Hoang Tuyet Lan, who made a new Asian record of 98 kg at Asian Para Games 2011, will compete in the women’s 52kg division.-VNA
