Vietnam and Singapore agreed on orientations for their future defence cooperation during an official friendship visit by Chief of General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, Senior Lieutenant General Do Ba Ty.

Ty, who is also Vice Minister of National Defence, was officially welcomed at a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Defence of Singapore on November 13 during the November 12-15 visit made at the invitation of the Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant General Ng Chee Meng.

During his meeting with Lieutenant General Ng Chee Meng, general Ty said the friendship and cooperation between the two armies were growing, built on an agreement on bilateral defence cooperation signed in September 2009.

The cooperation saw fresh changes and practical outcomes since the two countries’ relations were elevated to strategic partnership in September 2013, the Vietnamese officer noted.

He elaborated that dialogues and the exchange of visits that were well maintained at all levels have contributed to promoting mutual understanding and creating opportunities for result-orientated wide-ranging cooperation and coordination between forces.

For future affiliation, the two sides agreed to increase visit exchanges among young officers, reinforce training cooperation and experience sharing, and boost consultancy and collaboration when attending multilateral, regional and international forums, among others.

The same day, Ty and his entourage were received by Chan Chun Sing, Second Minister for Defence, who stated to continue supporting the broad deployment of measures to intensify the two countries’ defence ties for each country’s benefits and for peace, stability and development in the region and the world at large.

The Vietnamese delegation visited the Medical Corps, the Information Fusion Centre, the Changi Command and Control Centre and the Regional HADR Coordinating Centre.-VNA
