Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese contestants Nguyen Thanh Tung and Nguyen Xuan Thai have won two silver medals at the WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition held in Germany.

Tung and Thai, both 23 years old from Hanoi-based DENSO Vocational Skills Training Institute, secured the medals in CNC milling and CNC turning, according to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA).

This is the best achievement of Vietnam at the WorldSkills Competition so far. Before that, Vietnam once won a silver medal in the competition in 2019, also in CNC milling.

This year, the CNC milling category drew the participation of contestants from 22 countries across the world. China brought home the gold medal while the silver medal went to Vietnam and the bronze was bagged by Japan.

In the CNC turning category, China also obtained the highest achievement while Vietnam, Japan and Thailand shared the silver medal.

According to Nguyen Chi Truong, Director of the Department of Vocational Skills under the General Department of Vocational Training, one of the experts who have guided the contestants at the WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition is Truong The Dieu who was the first Vietnamese to have won the silver medal at the World Skills Competition 2019. With the achievements of his learners, Dieu became the first Vietnamese to have secured the silver medal in his capacity as both contestant and trainer.

In the past two years, the 46th WorldSkills Competition was delayed many times due to impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the organisers decided to hold a "special edition" for this 46th time, taking place in many countries in the two months of October and November 2022.

This year, the competition attracted more than 1,000 contestants from 63 countries and territories in 62 occupations.

The Vietnamese delegation had 11 candidates participating in 10 occupations, including mechatronics, cloud computing, information network cable installation, engineering water technology, electrical installation, CNC milling, CNC turning, CAD mechanical engineering design, information technology software solutions, and hair design.

Vietnamese contestants have been participating in occupations held in Germany, France, Austria, Finland, Japan and the Republic of Korea. Germany hosted nine occupations, of which the Vietnamese candidates took part in the occupations of CNC milling, CNC turning and water technology. The expenses for the candidates were taken from social sources and sponsors.

Nguyen Thi Viet Huong, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Vocational Training, said as the WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition is still going on until the end of November. Vietnamese contestants have yet to compete in three occupations. Vietnam still has hope of winning more medals, especially in the electrical installation profession.

Vietnam first participated in the WorldSkills Competition in 2007. At the previous competitions, the Vietnamese delegation all received Medallions of Excellence. In the three recent competitions, Vietnamese contestants all won medals.

At the 44th WorldSkills Competition in 2017, Tran Nguyen Ba Phuoc grabbed a bronze medal for the Vietnamese team in IT Software Solutions for Business.

The Vietnamese team also came home with five Medallions of Excellence in several skills, including mechanical engineering design – CAD, programming, bricklaying, electrical installations, programming, and cooking.

The 44th WorldSkills Competition took place in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, from October 8 to 20 featuring 1,250 competitors from 58 countries and territories worldwide, including 13 Vietnamese contestants.

They competed in 51 occupations, including 49 official occupations and two performance skills during the event. The Vietnamese team participated in 12 occupations, including CNC milling, programming, IT Software Solutions for Business, mechanical engineering design – CAD, bricklaying, electrical installations, and cooking.

At the 45th WorldSkills Competition held in Kazan, the capital city of the Republic of Tatarstan in August 2019, Truong The Dieu brought home the silver medal in Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) Milling.

Eight other Vietnamese competitors received Medallions of Excellence in the occupations of web technology, welding, electrical installation, automotive painting, plastic injection molding and metal plate processing, helping the country rank 25 among 63 countries and territories at the competition./.
