National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong on Feb. 2, urged chiefs of 21 overseas diplomatic missions to conduct deeper studies on geopolitical situations in their respective countries to provide consultancy in formulating foreign diplomatic policies.

At the meeting with 21 newly-appointed ambassadors and consuls general, Chairman Trong said Vietnam has never won such high prestige in the world, politically and economically, like it has today.

Quickly upon finishing its role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, Vietnam took over the ASEAN presidency.

The National Assembly (NA) of Vietnam has been elected as member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and took over the presidency of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA).

In this context, Trong said, it is critically important for representatives of Vietnam ’s diplomatic leadership to increase research in their host countries for comprehensive reports providing consultancy to the State and Party in the policy and strategy formulation process.

As the NA seeks to promote foreign relation activities, Trong said he wanted the ambassadors and consuls general to increase cooperation with NA bodies in order to further improve friendship and cooperation between the NA and legislative bodies of other countries and inter-parliamentary agencies in the region and the world.

The diplomats pledged to do their utmost to further the friendship and cooperative relations between Vietnam and foreign countries and international organisations. They also vowed to uphold the national foreign relation policies of dependency, diversity and multilateralism and care for the welfare of overseas Vietnamese./.
