Border guard and security forces of Vietnam’s central province of Thanh Hoa and Laos’ Houaphan province held a conference in Sam Nua town on July 24 to review their six-month cooperation in keeping border security and order and discuss the situation in the second half of the year.

The two sides agreed to continue boosting the popularisation and education of Vietnamese and Lao officials and people in border areas to strictly follow an agreement on border regulations as well as cooperation agreements signed by the two countries and the two provinces.

They reached a consensus on continued coordination in patrolling and protecting border lines and markers, especially at border gates and tracks through the border.

The two sides will regularly exchange information and strengthen coordination in fighting all kinds of crimes such as inducing Vietnam’s Mong ethnic people to join activities to sabotage the Lao revolution, human trafficking, drug, weapon and explosive transport and smuggling as well as the circulation of counterfeit money across the border.

In the time to come, they will continue consolidating, strengthening and further developing the special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos, and between the two provinces in particular.

Over the past time, the two countries’ border guard and security forces have maintained the strict implementation of signed agreements, creating favourable conditions for the travel of people, goods and vehicles through border gates.

In 2012 and the first six months of 2013, they coordinated in arresting seven drug traffickers and seizing nearly 120 kilograms of heroin and 34.6 kilograms of opium.-VNA
