Luc Ngan lychees are a famous local specialty of northern Bac Giang province. However, China is its only major export outlet besides the domestic market.

In order to reduce their reliance on the Chinese market and diversify its export markets, the Hong Giang communal authorities joined hands with the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Science and Technology to implement a pilot programme to export to Japan 10,000 tonnes of lychees that fully comply with international standards for hygiene and food safety, according to the newspaper.

The chairman of the Hong Giang commune People's Committee pointed out that if the pilot programme was successful, local authorities would implement a full-fledged marketing and export campaign for the Japanese market next year.-VNA
