Vietnam’s population reached 90 million on November 1, making the country the 14 th most populous country in the world and the 3 rd largest in Southeast Asia.

According to the General Department of Population and Family Planning under the Ministry of Public Health, the current population scale shows Vietnam has now entered a period known as the ‘golden population structure’ with about 63 million people in working age. The country is to see about 1 million people joining workforce annually.

As an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Vietnam, the “golden population structure” has, however, posed challenges regarding the creation of jobs, the improvement of human resources quality and an aging population.

With the current population scale and the maintenance of replacement level o f 2-2.1 children per women, Vietnam’s population will be added by 1 million people per year and hit a maximum scale of 110 million by 2050, 18 percent of which are those aged over 65 years old.-VNA
