Vietnamese student-athletes are competing at the third ASEAN Schools Games (ASG), which kicked off at Max Pavillion stadium in Singapore on July 1.

The week-long event offers a chance for students in Southeast Asia to improve their physical and spiritual life and engage in exchanges with regional friends, said Singaporean Minister of Education Heng Sweakeat in his opening remarks.

Together with the Singapore Youth Festival 2011, to be held on July 1-29 with the participation of some 45,000 young people, the ASG will bring about an exciting atmosphere for participating students, he added.

With 147 members, the Vietnamese delegation will compete in six out of 12 sports, namely swimming, table tennis, basketball, track and field, gymnastics and tennis.

Vietnamese students are expected to shine at track and field, gymnastics, table tennis and tennis, said Deputy Head of the Students’ Affairs Department under the Ministry of Education and Training Le Manh Hung, who led the delegation to the event.

The annual event, the largest of its kind in the region held in rotation, drew 1,100 athletes from Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam and the host country./.
