Young talent Thach Kim Tuan has won one gold and two silver medals at the ongoing Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

He finished behind a Chinese weightlifter in the 59kg category in the snatch and total lift event, however, Tuan took the lead in the clean and jerk event.

Do Dinh Khang, head of the Weightlifting-Bodybuilding Division of the National Sports Administration said Tuan’s achievement in this event has been outstanding. It is a testament to his stamina in 2009.

The 15-year-old weightlifter won three silver medals in the First Youth World Weightlifting Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand in May.

Based on the achievements at the events, the International Weightlifting Federation approved two berths for Vietnam at the First Youth Olympic Games, which will be held in Singapore on August 14-26 next year and will draw 60 male and 50 female athletes, Khang said.

According to Khang, with such outstanding performances, Tuan and female weightlifter Nguyen Thi Hong, who won bronze medal at Chiang Mai event, are expected to represent Vietnam at the Olympic event.

The youth weightlifting team will gather early next year in preparation for the Olympic event and the 16th Asian Games./.
