Vietnamese student Nguyen Le Minh Phu won a gold medal at the FIDE World Schools Chess Championships 2015, which were held in Thailand from May 6-14.

Phu scored six points after seven rounds in the Open Under-7 blitz event, to win the only title for Vietnam.
He also ranked fourth at the standard event, becoming the most successful player on the Vietnamese team.

In addition, Vietnamese player Cao Xuan An reached the top 10 in the U13 standard category.

Vietnam, which sent four masters to the Pattaya event, ranked 12th in the competition.

China crowned the first place with five golds, five silvers, and four bronzes.

The second and third places went to Azerbaijan and the Philippines, respectively.

This year’s tournament attracted some 500 students from 35 countries throughout the world, who competed in 14 categories in three events, including standard, blitz, and rapid.

It is only the second time that the championships took place in Asia.-VNA
