An athletes’ village built by Vietnam’s Hoang Anh Gia Lai Group has been inaugurated in Vientiane, Laos, to serve the 25th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), which will be held in Laos in in December.

A ceremony to transfer the project to the Lao Government was held in Vientiane on Sept. 2.

Addressing the ceremony, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan affirmed that the project manifested the special friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos .

The Deputy PM said the SEA Games 25 Athletes’ Village was a great success for the Hoang Anh Gia Lai group’s investment programme in Laos . The project was also carried out under the direction of the policies on investment and cooperation development of the two countries’ Parties and States.

Also present at the ceremony, Lao Deputy PM Somsavad Lengsavat said the Lao Government has singled out the SEA Games 25 Athletes’ Village as one of the most outstanding projects in the country and Hoang Anh Gia Lai has become a major co-sponsor of the event.

The project was built at a cost of 19 million USD on an area of 42,000 sq.m., accommodating about 4,000 athletes.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai provided 4 million USD as non-refundable aid to the Lao Government and 15 million USD as a no-interest loan.

After SEA Games 25, the project will be a dormitory of the Lao National University.

The same day, the Laos-Vietnam Friendship Senior High School was also inaugurated in Vientiane as a gift of Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh to Vientiane .

The school, 5km from Vientiane’s centre, was built in nearly one year at a cost of 48.7 billion VND (2.7 million USD). The project can accommodate over 800 students.

Also present at the inauguration ceremony, Vietnamese Deputy PM Nhan expressed his wish that the school would contribute to training talented young people in Laos .

He said that Vietnam will provide scholarships to the school’s best students to study in Vietnam and will help Vientiane prepare teachers and academic programmes for the school to operate soon./.
