The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Vietnam-Germany diplomatic relationship (September 23, 1975 – 2015) on October 1.

The event also marked the 25th anniversary of Germany’s unification day (October 3, 1990 – 2015).

Addressing the event, Vice Chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee Le Thanh Liem emphasised that over the past 40 years, the Vietnam-Germany relationship has made long and solid strides, including being upgraded to a strategic partnership in 2011.

Their strong political basis promoted bilateral cooperation in economics, culture, education and health. Germany was Vietnam’s biggest trade partner in the European Union in 2014.

According to Liem, HCM City has always been a pioneer in implementing cooperation activities with Germany and the European nation is one of the city’s top trade partners.

Liem believed the Vietnam-Germany friendship would continue to flourish in the next 40 years and together the two nations would write new and more impressive chapters in their friendship and cooperative relationship.

Hans-Dieter Stell, Consul General of Germany in HCM City , highlighted similarities of the two countries that brought the two countries closer.

Since Germany’s unification, Vietnam-Germany ties have accelerated and achieved important landmarks, said the Consul General.

The Germany House project in HCM City and other activities have promoted the multifaceted relation between the two countries, he added.

Consul General Hans-Dieter Stell believed the Vietnam-Germany friendship relationship would continue developing in the years ahead.-VNA
