Hanoi (VNA) – The comprehensive cooperation between the National Assemblies of Vietnam and Laos has developed fruitfully in the recent past, said Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnamese NA Tong Thi Phong.

During her talks with her Lao counterpart Somphanh Phengkhammy in Hanoi on April 25, Phong said leaders of the two parliaments have held regular meetings and co-chaired activities to share experience in law-making and supervision.

The sides have also coordinated well in multilateral diplomatic affairs, particularly at inter-parliamentary forums in the world and in the region such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) and the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF), she said.

Based on the results of the cooperation and positive outcomes of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Nguyen Phu Trong’s official visit to Laos, the two sides agreed to study and deploy new collaboration activities, focusing on the exchange of experience in legislation to serve international integration and joint supervision of the implementation of signed cooperation pacts between the two nations.

Phong affirmed that the Vietnamese NA is willing to coordinate closely with its Lao counterpart in sharing information and experience in legislation as well as in implementing their roles in supervising and deciding important issues of each country.

For his part, Somphanh Phengkhammy said the ongoing vist aims to fortify relations between the Vietnamese and Lao Parties, States, and specially the two legislatures.

He said the Lao NA is preparing for the parliamentary election in 2021 and hoped the Vietnamese legislature will share its experience to help its Lao counterpart improve its operation effectiveness.

The Lao official also asked for the Vietnamese NA’s experience regarding the organisation of elections and operation of people’s councils at all levels.-VNA
