Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano hailed Vietnam’s consideration and determination to develop nuclear power for peaceful purposes, ensuring security and nuclear safety.

During a January 10 working session with key leaders of the southern central province of Ninh Thuan where the first nuclear power plant of Vietnam is located, the IAEA leader lauded Vietnam’s clear policies in building legal documents in the field as well as the construction of an infrastructure system for the Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant project.

He expressed his pleasure at the remarkable progress of Vietnam during the implementation of the country’s nuclear power development programme, as well as Vietnam’s participation in major global discussions in the field, including the International Convention on Nuclear Safety.

The 2011 Fukushima nuclear incident in Japan left many lessons in nuclear safety, he said, adding that the Ninh Thuan plant has been adjusted to ensure its safety.

According to Vice Chairman of the Ninh Thuan provincial People’s Committee Do Huu Nghi, the locality hopes for more support from the IAEA during project supervision and management, thus ensuring the safety, quality and efficiency of the plant.

Earlier, Amano and a working team from the IAEA visited the construction site of the Ninh Thuan power plant in Phuoc Dinh commune, Thuan Nam district. They inspected nuclear development models and updated the progress of the project.-VNA
