The military-run telecom Viettel’s branch in central Thanh Hoa province presented 160 bicycles worth 1 million VND (44.5 USD) each to impoverished students in mountainous Quan Hoa district on September 8.

The gifts are part of the scholarship programme “Vi em hieu hoc” (for studious students) jointy funded by Viettel, the Ministry of Education and Training, the Vietnam Association for Promoting Education and the Radio Voice of Vietnam.

The 10-year programme, launched in 2014 conveying the message “Millions of small wishes need a good deed”, focuses on 2,331 poor communes in coastal areas.

Viettel joined Vietnam’s telecom market in October 2000 and has become the largest mobile operator in the country after 15 years, earning nearly 9 trillion USD in revenue in 2014.

The firm has been practicing corporate social responsibility by funding the scholarship programme and implementing many community-oriented events such as “Heart for Children”, “Children’s Smile” and housing projects for poor people.-VNA
