– The Vinh Orange-Nghe An Fair 2017 opened in the central province of Nghe An on December 28, aiming to promote locally-grown oranges and help customers recognise high quality products.

Nghe An has rather severe weather with strong sunshine, frequent rains, dry wind and numerous storms and floods. In return, the locality is the favourable land for orange tree with typical sweet and fresh taste.

Vinh orange has long been well-known domestically and globally. It was exported to East European countries and the former Soviet Union (Russia now) since the 1960s.

According to Tran Quoc Thanh, Director of the provincial Department of Science and Technology, Vinh orange has received geographical indication protection and become a national property.

Since earning the geographical indication in 2007, the product’s value was raised sharply, Thanh said. However, he pointed to a number of problems facing the product, including frequent crop loss and fake products.

In order to deal with the issues, the provincial People’s Committee directed departments and sectors to strengthen the management of product quality, market and trademark promotion, thus preserving and developing the product.

The fair will be run until December 30, during which a number of events will be held, including a conference for businesses, cooperatives, farmers, organisations, and tree sapling suppliers.-VNA
