The Paediatrics Hospital 2 and the Pham Ngoc Thach Medicine University in Ho Chi Minh City have signed a cooperation project with the Belgian Interuniversity to study children’s kidney and urologic diseases.

The project, which aims reduce the incidence kidney and urologic diseases and fatality in children through detecting the diseases by urine test strips and pre-natal ultrasound method, will be carried out on a trial basis in Thu Duc and Can Gio districts, Ho Chi Minh City, from now until 2014 at a cost of more than 11 billion VND.


In addition, Belgium will organise short-term training courses in the field for Vietnamese medical workers.

Vice Director of the Paediatrics Hospital 2 Truong Quang Dinh, who is also head of the project, said that Vietnam has more than 200 new patients suffering from chronic kidney failure each year, of which 50 percent are only detected after the age of 14. He said 85 percent are admitted to the hospital at the late stage and 73 percent do not receive treatment

Meanwhile, in Belgium, most of patients are detected at the early stage which help prevent the diseases from developing into chronic kidney failure./.
