The Embassies of Vietnam in Japan, Thailand and China hosted ceremonies on August 8 to hoist the flag of ASEAN to celebrate the bloc’s 44th founding anniversary.

The event also aimed to mark 16 years since Vietnam officially joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (July 28, 1995 – July 28, 2011).

At the 44th ASEAN Foreign Ministerial Meeting in Indonesia this year, ASEAN leaders reached consensus on hoisting the ASEAN flag next to national flags at their diplomatic representative offices on ASEAN Day (August 8), starting from this year, to raise public awareness of ASEAN and the bloc’s community building process.

Over the past 16 years, Vietnam has made positive and effective contributions to ASEAN’s activities. The country is joining efforts with other ASEAN members to build the ASEAN Community by 2015 based on three pillars: the Politics – Security Community, the Economic Community and the Socio-Cultural Community.
