Hanoi (VNA) – The national women’s team of Vietnam have hope of competing at the Asian Cup following the Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s Women's Football Committee decision to expand the tournament in 2022.

The 2022 AFC event will have 12 teams instead of eight, giving Vietnam a bigger chance to take part in the event.

The AFC’s decision to increase the number of teams follows FIFA's decision to raise the number of teams participating in the FIFA Women’s World Cup from 24 to 32 teams in 2023.

At that time, Asia will have eight slots to compete in the world’s biggest football event, and also opens the door for Vietnam after missing out in 2015 when they lost a qualifying play-off match 2-1 to Thailand.

On February 19, India was chosen to host the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2022. Teams will play in three groups of four. The matches will take place in Navi Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Goa.

At present, the Vietnamese women’s team are training in Hanoi to prepare for the play-off round for the AFC Women's Olympic Qualification Tournament with Australia next month./.
