The sixth friendship meeting between the Foreign Ministries of Vietnam and Laos is being held in the central province of Ha Tinh from March 17-20.

The Vietnamese delegation is led by Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and the Lao delegation is headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongloun Sisoulith.

At the meeting, the two sides reviewed the cooperation between the two Foreign Ministries since the previous meeting in Vientiane in June 2008.

The two sides expressed pleasure at the fine development of the traditional friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.

They affirmed the intention to work closely together to organise meaningful activities during the Year of Vietnam-Laos Friendship and Solidarity 2012, which marks the 50 th anniversary of Vietnam-Laos diplomatic ties (1962-2012) and 35 years of the signing of the Vietnam-Laos Friendship and Cooperation Treaty (1977-2012).

The two sides agreed that the close and effective cooperation between the two Foreign Ministries has contributed to boosting the bilateral ties for peace and stability in the region and the world as well as the prosperity of the community of ASEAN countries.

They agreed that the two Foreign Ministries should continue to improve the efficiency of their cooperation in particular and cooperation between the two countries in general, in order to successfully implement the two countries’ foreign policies set out at the 11 th Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the 9 th Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.

During the meeting, Pham Binh Minh and Thongloun Sisoulith signed a cooperation agreement between the two Foreign Ministries in the 2012-2017 period. A cooperation agreement between the Vietnamese Diplomatic Academy and the Lao Institute of Foreign Affairs was also inked on this occasion.

During his stay in Vietnam, Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongloun Sisoulith paid courtesy visits to Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.-VNA
