Experience in wetland and coastal management were major topics at an international workshop in the northern province of Nam Dinh on June 25-27.

Participants shared a view that failure of coordination among relevant ministries, local administrations and residential communities were apparent in wetland and mangrove forest management in Vietnam.

Japmes Peters from the Winrock International said forests have brought in huge profits for a number of businesses otherwise those who have worked hard for forest development have not yet benefited from their great services.

In regard of Vietnam’s plan to expand acreage of mangrove forests to 300,000 ha, To Xuan Phuc from Forest Trends recommended that the country should further strengthen the management and tighten the use of wetlands.

Vietnam should finalise the wetland planning, upgrade economic and financial policies for forest protection, expand the community-based management model and work out governance policies towards benefit sharing among management agencies, communities and residents, he said.

Participants were shown around the Xuan Thuy National Park, where the workshop took place, to see by their own eyes an example of the wetland ecology, services and income sources in Vietnam after discussing these topics.

The workshop also dealt with issues relating to carbon absorption in the marine and coastal ecology./.
