Seventeen Vietnamese secondary students have won ASEAN scholarships to study four years in selected schools in Singapore.

The scholarships are provided by the Singaporean government.

Of the 17 recipients, 14 come from Hanoi and the remaining three from Ho Chi Minh City.

First launched in 1996, the ASEAN secondary scholarships are granted to around 20-25 students every year. So far, about 270 Vietnamese students have been awarded this scholarship, Singaporean Ambassador Simon Wong told a Vietnam News Agency reporter on the sidelines of the award ceremony in Hanoi on October 22.

He said the prospect for education cooperation between Singapore and Vietnam is very promising as Vietnamese people are very conscious about the importance of education.

Besides the ASEAN scholarship programme, Singaporean government also provides A-Star scholarships for Vietnamese undergraduates to study in Singapore, he added.

So far this year, the Singaporean government has provided 50 scholarships of different types to Vietnamese students./.
