Vietnamese athletes won three gold medals on day one of the 21 st World Military Taekwondo Championships, which got underway in Ho Chi Minh City on October 21.

Later the same day, Pham Chi Khanh also bagged Vietnam a silver medal in the performance event.

This is the first time that Vietnam has hosted this tournament and the event attracted 214 military athletes from 31 countries, competing in two events, combat and performance.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vietnam ’s Minister of Defence, Phung Quang Thanh, said that the event helps international friends to understand more about Vietnam , its people, history and cultural identities.

It also helps to strengthen friendship and cooperation between the People’s Army of Vietnam and other armed forces across the world, Thanh added.-VNA
